Congressman Hakeem Jefferies leads growing group of Brooklynites backing Letitia James for Public Advocate

New York, NY – With the Democratic Primary just 13 days away, Councilwoman Letitia “Tish” James continues to solidify Brooklyn support in her bid to become the next New York City Public Advocate. Today, the campaign announced the endorsement of Congressman Hakeem Jefferies as well as City Council Members James Brennan and Michael Nelson.

"Councilwoman Letitia James is a passionate fighter for social and economic justice who has consistently stood up against powerful interests throughout her career,” said Congressman Hakeem Jeffries. “She understands that government must work for working families, make sense for the middle class and strengthen senior citizens. I know that Tish will fight hard to improve the quality of life for all New Yorkers, and that is why I am proud to endorse her compelling candidacy for Public Advocate."
Just yesterday, James was endorsed by Congressman Charles Rangel. She also has the backing of Congresswoman Yvette Clarke.

“Over the years, I have had the pleasure of working with Councilwoman James on various issues that don’t just affect my constituents, but all middle class and working families around this City,” said Assembly Member James Brennan. “Whether it’s fighting for more affordable housing, good paying jobs, more education funding, saving childcare slots and after school programs, Letitia James is there for us all. She’ll make a great Public Advocate.”

“I have seen Councilwoman Letitia James in action, during my time in the Council. She has the tenacity and compassion to do an amazing job as our City’s next Public Advocate. There is no one that I could think of who is better suited for this position than Letitia James,” said Council Member Nelson. “Letitia James has been and will always be a fighter for all New Yorkers and that is why I support her for New York City Public Advocate.”

“I’m truly honored to earn the support of leaders in Brooklyn and across New York City who are ready for a Public Advocate who never stops fighting for working people,” said Councilwoman Letitia “Tish” James. “In the City Council, I’ve been proud to pass the Safe Housing Act, which helps tenants get emergency repairs; I stood up against Mayor Bloomberg’s term-limit extension; and helped pass legislation to ban racial profiling. I’ll bring the same passion and experience to the Office of the Public Advocate.”

The new endorsees join the list of other Brooklyn elected officials and grassroots groups who have backed James’ campaign.
