Sanitation Workers Union Local 831 to Endorse Tish James for Public Advocate

Sanitation workers join growing list of supporters for James’ campaign

April 24, 2013 (New York, NY) – This afternoon, the Uniformed Sanitationmen’s Association Local 831, the union representing New York’s sanitation workers will formally endorse Councilwoman Letitia “Tish” James for Public Advocate at the union’s monthly shop stewards meeting.

“We are endorsing Councilwoman Tish James for Public Advocate because Tish has always looked out for our members and all the working men and women without whom New York could not function,” said Local 831 President Harry Nespoli. “Municipal employees are the backbone of our city and we need elected officials who recognize that. As a City Councilwoman, Tish has stood up for everyday New Yorkers and she’ll do the same as our next Public Advocate. We are proud to endorse her and look forward to working hard to send Tish James to the Public Advocate’s Office.”

At 3 pm today, the union will officially endorse James at their headquarters (25 Cliff Street, New York, NY 10038).

“Whether they are picking up our trash or plowing our streets after snowfall, sanitation workers play a critical, and often overlooked, role in the daily lives of New Yorkers. I’m honored to earn their endorsement and the support of working families across the City who want a Public Advocate who stands up for middle-class and working-class people,” said Councilwoman Letitia “Tish” James. “My record of activism and leadership on progressive causes includes protecting tenants by passing the Safe Housing Act, supporting children and families by preserving funding for after-school programs and fire houses, and ensuring that all communities get their fair share from government and large developments. That’s exactly the kind of vision I’ll bring to the Office of the Public Advocate.”

Local 831’s endorsement follows a growing list of supporters for James’ campaign including SEIU 32BJ, CWA 1180, UAW, DC 1707, and Local 802. James has also been endorsed by numerous elected officials including fellow Councilmembers Maria del Carmen Arroyo, Melissa Mark-Viverito, and Sara Gonzalez. Last week, Democracy for New York City (DFNYC), a group dedicated to advancing progressive causes in New York, also endorsed Tish James for Public Advocate.
